Quotes

Brief overview

• The perfect quote is a single line that stands out from the dialog that can be used in all manner of situations:
  
  
• "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."
• "You had me at 'hello'."
• "Here's lookin' at you, kid."
• "Fool of a Took."
  
  
• Brief exchanges between characters that call to mind particularly memorable incidents in the movie/episode are also interesting.
• Quotes must be in English, even if the title's language is not.
• Please specify the source of the translation, e.g. [subtitled version], for quotes from non-English titles.
• For quotes from unscripted shows (reality shows,improvised comedy, chat shows, etc), please make sure they are accurate and memorable.
• Please submit quotes for television shows to the relevant episode. Quotes submitted at series level should represent repeated lines or themes of the show. Please note that on some parent series listings it is possible to link to certain characters and not others. This is caused by historical functionality pre-dating the episode specific ttconsts. In these cases please add the quotes for those characters directly to the relevant episodes.

Formatting rules



• Please make sure quotes are correctly written and spelled.
• The pulldown menus for names and characters on the submission form may contain different versions of a character's name. This is because we prefer to list the name as it is used throughout the movie, rather than the full name from the credits, and we make the change before we publish. Sometimes this is inconsistent, hence the multiple character names. While this can look a little untidy, it's not a critical error, so please don't worry about tidying it up - just use the most sensible version of the character name from the list.
• For those rare cases where no character is associated with the quote (e.g., it's on a title card), use "unknown" from the pulldown and enter the character name as Title Card (or Intertitle, or whatever you feel is appropriate).
• For silent films, we treat dialog on title cards as if it was spoken - we only use "[title card]" for non-dialog cards.
• You can include stage directions; they should be placed in square brackets:

[door opens]

You can put them inline (i.e., with the character's speech) like this:

[laughing] A lemon curry? [pause] Don't mind if I do.

...or on their own line (simply deselect the character name and leave it blank. Tip: While it depends on your operating system and browser, you can probably deselect an item by holding down the Ctrl key while mouse-clicking.)

For quotes from trailers, please add:

[from trailer]

on its own line at the top.

Quotes should not include line breaks, other than at the end of someone's speech. Any text after a line break will not appear on the site. This means that poems or songs have to be quoted with a slash to mark the end of each line:

Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any wool / Yes, sir, yes, sir, three bags full.

Please do not wrap the quoted line in "quotation marks". 

A quote within a quote should use 'single quotation marks' not double

Please do not use UPPER CASE to denote shouting (use the stage direction [shouts] instead) or emphasis - please use *asterisks* instead.

Names and titles cannot be hyperlinked within quotes.

For a dash, we use a single short dash/hyphen - with a single space on either side.

For an ellipsis, we use three dots (no spaces between them, but always one after) "... "

Please do not use multiple exclamation marks or a combination of exclamation and question marks (?!).

Please do not use "smart quotes" (aka "curly quotes")

A "line" for purposes of the entry form is any continuous speech by a single character, regardless of the number of sentences, including any embedded stage directions. Standalone stage directions or notes like "first lines" count as a separate line.

As a slightly special case, we're interested in collecting first and last lines of a film or episode. Please use the special stage directions [first lines] and [last lines] - use the plural, even if there is only one line.
