What is Advanced Search?

IMDb lists millions of different titles, of many varying types (e.g., movies, episodic series, video games, podcasts, etc.) - sometimes it can be hard to track down the page (or groups) you're looking for.

To help with this, IMDb.com includes the Advanced Search function, which provides a wide selection of values you can choose to track down the specific production based on the data we have available.

You can find the advanced search feature by selecting All to the left of the search bar, followed by Advanced Search:

  • Two people who were found in the same title

Simply enter the names or titles into the appropriate field and his Search

For example, to find out which titles Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were credited for, enter the names in the fields “Name 1” and “Name 2” and click “Search”.

This search will return all the titles both individuals were both credited for.

Searching using Topics

The Topic search allows you to identify titles or people based on terms associated with their pages, within different data types.

For example, if you wanted to see all movies with the word “space” listed in their plot outlines - simply enter the query and hit search:

Example of searching for plot

This would bring up a list of titles whose plot contains the word “space”:

What to do when you still can't find the information

If you're still unable to find the person, title, or company on the database, it may be for a couple of reasons:

  1. They've not been added to the database yet - IMDb is a collaborative platform, this means the information comes from members of the public just like you. If we're missing the information from the database, you can find more about how to submit this yourself in our Contribution Zone

  2. The person, title, or company may be listed on the database, but the search terms you're using aren't correct, or aren't associated with the title. Try tweaking your terms and you may be able to find the information you're looking for.
