Frequently asked questions

Who can add images?

You!

Anyone who has signed-in to IMDb can now add images to title pages (e.g. movies, episodic series, video games, podcasts, etc.) on IMDb.

How do I add an image?

Simply go to the image gallery of your favorite title/production and open the gallery by clicking the Photos option under All topics found at the top of the title's page.

On the Photos page, you'll find an "+ Add photo" option, as seen here:

add photo to title gallery example

You can use this to upload images directly to IMDb. As with all other forms of contribution, user-submitted images must comply with our Image Submission Guidelines.

For titles with no images, on the main title page where images are typically displayed, the "Add photo" option will be available. If you're using the Title Reference view, click the "Add photo" option under Photos & videos. The image contribution window will then appear on the right-hand-side of the page.

This feature is currently available on both the IMDb and IMDbPro full and mobile optimized websites and IMDb mobile apps (iOS and Android).

There are two exceptions to this:

  1. We do not allow images to be added to adult titles
  2. Images cannot be added to in-development titles
What type of images can I add?

The following types of images are allowed:

  • Poster - An official poster created by the studio used to promote or advertise the title
  • Still Frame - A single static image ("frame") taken from the actual title
  • Behind the Scene - A photo taken during filming, containing details such as camera location etc.
  • Publicity - A photo taken to publicize a person or production
  • Event - A photo taken during an activity, party, or event associated with the title
  • Product/Box Art - Official product artwork such as DVD or Blu-ray covers
  • Production Art - Additional official artwork such as original storyboards or concept art

For complete details, please see our Image Submission Guidelines.

What types of images can I not add?

Please treat the IMDb community with respect. Do not add:

  • Profane, obscene or disparaging images
  • Images with nudity, or any images with implied or explicit sexual acts
  • Images with excessive violence
  • Images containing personal or contact information of any person, or which otherwise violate a person's right to privacy
  • Images containing any personal information about children under 13
  • Images advertising for products or services
  • Poor quality images (see Image Guidelines - Image Quality)
  • Images that are not directly connected with the title or actor page you are submitting them to
  • Paparazzi photos, "selfie" photos, or fan art
  • Book, magazine, or soundtrack covers
  • Images for which you do not own the copyright or have the necessary rights as defined in the IMDb Conditions of Use

Content which violates these guidelines is subject to removal by IMDb without notice.

For complete details, please see our Image Submission Guidelines.

Why did my image quality change?

Behind the scenes there are factors that can change how the same image might look across different mediums, such as on:

  • A digital camera
  • A photo editor
  • A website
  • Printed paper

The best way to explain this is that just as there are different image file types (e.g. JPEG and PNG), there are also different color profiles. Two common examples include AdobeRBG and sRGB. Depending on profile associated with the image, it might change how it'll look when uploaded to the website:

Correcting an image's color

If you notice an image looks slightly different on the website from the file uploaded, it likely had an unsupported color profile such as AdobeRGB - to fix this, you'll need to modify the image's color profile to sRGB and re-upload to the database. Most photo editing tools should allow you to do this.

How do I update a title's poster?

Poster changes can be requested via the  icon - however the image will need to be the type poster, more help can be found in our Poster Update article.

How can I report an image for removal?

You can submit a request to IMDb to remove an image by using the  option listed at the bottom of the image viewer.

Flag image for removal

From here, provide a reason for the removal along with any comments to help a member of the team review the request.

IMDb reserves the right to delete or withdraw submitted content at any time.

How do I fix an incorrectly tagged image?

If you find an image tagged to the wrong name or title, please select the  option and correct the association.

I tagged a name on my title image, but it doesn't appear on the name page - why?

User supplied title images are only visible on title pages and do not appear on names.

Adding images to name pages requires an IMDbPro subscription. To learn more, please see Adding photos to IMDb.

How do I add a headshot or other images to an IMDb name page?

The "Add photo" option is only available on IMDb title pages (i.e. movies, TV shows, TV episodes, video games, etc.). Adding images to name pages requires an IMDbPro membership - to learn more, please see Adding photos to IMDb.

Industry Insider?

If an image is of a different individual and is incorrectly assigned to a name page then you may report these cases via our contact form.

However, please note that any headshot change requests for the correct individual raised for stylistic reasons will not be actioned.

What image formats, sizes and resolutions are supported?

IMDb supports JPEG and PNG images. Images must be no smaller than 50KB and no larger than 25MB. Both the image height and width must be between 500 and 8000 pixels. Based on the dimensions, IMDb may crop the image as necessary.

For Film and TV posters, to mimimize cropping, we recommend a vertical alignment (i.e. portrait orientation) with an aspect ratio of 1:0.675. For Podcast covers, to prevent cropping, we recommend a square (1:1) aspect ratio as is the industry standard for audio titles. We recommend always providing the highest quality image available.

How do I fix the "type" of an image?

The type of an image (e.g. poster, still frame, publicity, etc) can't be amended manually once available on the site.

If you want to correct an incorrect image type, (for example, a poster listed as a 'still frame'), you can let us know via our contact form by selecting the options:

IMDb Contributor > I need help and haven't submitted an update > Images & video > Other image/video issues followed by the E-mail button.

I'm getting an "Error adding Image" when uploading an image. What should I do?

First, check your file. Make sure your image is a JPEG or PNG, between 50KB and 20MB, and has an RGB color space. If you are unsure of the image file type, please open your image via an image editor (Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw) and re-save as a JPEG or PNG. Set the Present to "Web", which will convert the image to the RGB color space. All images intended for the web should be RGB, images intended for printing may be RGB or CMYK.

Second, check your browser. While image upload is supported on all modern browsers, please make sure your browser is completely updated. If you continue to have issues, please try another browser. IMDb recommends either Firefox or Chrome for image upload.

Third, check your internet connection. If you are having trouble uploading very large files (18-20MB), please try compressing your image slightly. If you have an unstable internet connection, a smaller image may help. Please note, the larger your image the better it will display on IMDb, so only compress your image if necessary.

Lastly, if you continue to have issues with your browsers or internet connection, if possible try uploading from a different computer at a different location (i.e. your home or work). While unlikely, there may be an internal setting within your computer or network which is interfering with the upload process.

Instead of uploading an image, can I just enter a link to an image?

No, all images must be uploaded to IMDb.

Who owns the images I add?

The right's owner of the image continues to own the image.

By uploading your image, you agree to the IMDb Conditions of Use, which grants IMDb rights to display and use image content.

As noted above, users are not permitted to upload images that they do not own or have the necessary rights to upload. Images uploaded in violation of this policy will be removed.

Does adding images impact my contributor ranking?

Yes, new images and all related image submissions count towards your overall contributor ranking.
